To enact their plot, they need the more than 3,000 sheriffs nationwide to act as their local informants, abductors, and detainers.
The Trump regime needs sheriffs to:
Give information on people in jails
Hold and transfer people
Allow their deputies to act as ICE agents
Rent out beds in their jails to ICE
But sheriffs don’t work for Trump.
They work for us, because we elect them. The Trump regime will subvert the democratic process and use funding to reward sheriffs who collaborate with ICE, separate families, and abduct our immigrant neighbors. And they will punish those who refuse. That’s why we need to remind sheriffs that Trump may try and withhold funds, but we decide if they stay in office or not.
They’ve used this playbook before.
At the end of Trump’s first term, 47% of deportations went through jails controlled by sheriffs. But we’ve also successfully pressured sheriffs across the country to refuse to collaborate with ICE. From New Orleans to North Carolina to Illinois, community organizers have forced sheriffs to end collaborations with ICE, and removed sheriffs who didn’t listen to their community.
As the Trump regime ramps up their mass deportation plan, we need to ramp our pressure on sheriffs.
